“It is a Great Piece … Very Pure, but Sort of Desolate …”

Philharmonic Concertmaster Glenn Dicterow describes Bartók’s Violin Concerto No. 1, a work from the composer’s youth that was inspired by his doomed love for Steffi Geyer, an acclaimed violinist. He performs the concerto on May 19, 22, and 26.

The New York concerts come on the heels of Dicterow’s triumph in the work in San Francisco, with San Francisco’s Examiner.com describing his performance as “resplendent and laced with easy elegance, refined detail and restraint. Such musicianship is not heard often enough.”
