B is for Bernstein
The A to Z of Carnegie Hall, a blog series on our nearby neighbor’s web site, lands today on the letter B, with an entry on Leonard Bernstein. Carnegie Hall was the Philharmonic’s home in 1943, and on a fateful day that November, Bernstein was called upon to make his conducting debut with the Orchestra, as a last-minute substitute for Bruno Walter.

The performance, as fate would have it, was broadcast nationwide on CBS Radio, and received widespread critical acclaim. Notably—at a time when European musicians were still considered to be the best in these matters—Bernstein was celebrated on the front page of The New York Times as the first American to conduct the Philharmonic.
