Today marks the 150th anniversary of composer Claude Debussy’s birth. How much less colorful would the musical world be without his Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun? Without his La Mer?
But there was more to this trailblazer than these exquisite, if ever-present pieces. Charles Dutoit will conduct the Philharmonic in a relative rarity November 1–3 — The Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian: Symphonic Fragments, selections from the composer’s 1911 blending of oratorio, ballet, and mime depicting a story that fuses faith and eroticism.
