On this date in 1959, the New York Philharmonic played its first concert in Moscow, during a ground-breaking tour behind the Iron Curtain. Leonard Bernstein spruced up for his conducting appearance with a haircut at the American pavilion of an international trade fair, designed to extol the benefits of life in the U.S.
