Lesson with Lenny Music Director Alan Gilbert remembers distinctly the first time he conducted for Leonard Bernstein. It was a rehearsal of Mozart’s Symphony No. 36, Linz, and Lenny suddenly starting conducting along, finding a powerful pulse: “I hadn’t realized that it was possible in such calm music to feel such a strong rhythmic underpinning.
