After Bach
Alan Gilbert: “Before talking about the Schoenberg, I’d like to say what an honor it is to have been part of Manny’s first-ever performance of Bach’s D-minor Keyboard Concerto.”
Emanuel Ax: “That is very kind of you…. At least we ended the piece at the same time.”
So went the preface to the two gentlemen’s introduction of Schoenberg’s Piano Concerto last evening, which covered the work’s trajectory from the lilting “Life Was So Easy” through turbulence to resolution and acceptance in the final movement, “Life Goes On.”
They’ll continue the onstage conversation tonight and tomorrow.
