Boulez-Vous
The second Music Director birthday of the week falls today, and we wish a hearty bonne anniversaire to Pierre Boulez! Our fearless leader from 1971 to 1977, who turns 88 today, is pictured above, courtesy of the Digital Archives, with that dean of American composers, Aaron Copland, on opening night for the Philharmonic’s 1974–75 season.
Though it’s been more than three decades since his time at the head of the ship, the ripples of Boulez’s legacy (one that included the introduction of Rug Concerts and Prospective Encounters) are still felt, and we continue his initiatives to spread the new-music love next week with the return of our series CONTACT! at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Symphony Space on April 5 and 6, respectively.
