On the Case
"The phone rings at 7:46 and it’s the 212 area code. I thought, ‘Yep, here it is. This is what it looks like.’ ”
Case Scaglione, Philharmonic Assistant Conductor, recounts for the Houston Chronicle how he learned about his debut conducting the Orchestra last November. He was in a taxi when he got the classic last-minute call to substitute for Kurt Masur (who was mired in traffic himself) and was told, “We need you to suit up. We’ll hold the elevator for you downstairs.” Case didn’t even have time to alert friends or family that he would be conducting Brahms’s Double Concerto, with Concertmaster Glenn Dicterow and cellist Alisa Weilerstein.
Case recently made his debut with the Houston Symphony, his hometown orchestra.
