As we were saying…

It’s that time of year again…..
Ah yes, we’ve been hearing a lot of this as the Philharmonic’s home, Avery Fisher Hall, has been the site of numerous commencement ceremonies. Congrats to all the grads!

Where in the world is Alan Gilbert?
Back home at Avery Fisher Hall leading rehearsals with the New York Philharmonic for the first time since February. This morning he led the Orchestra in Marc Neikrug’s Concerto for Orchestra, which will receive its World Premiere on Thursday evening.
We overheard some musicians telling Mr. Neikrug backstage how much they enjoy the work. Looking forward to opening night!

Sixteen Candles
Er, 112 candles, that is. Today our mascot — Jake the Philharmonic Dog — celebrates his 16th birthday. Jake has spent his entire life backstage at Avery Fisher Hall meeting and greeting the world-class musicians that grace its stage, and even served as inspiration for the children’s book Jake the Philharmonic Dog. Not bad for a “dog’s life.”
Join us in wishing Jake a very Happy Sweet Sixteen!

The Writing on the Wall
The next time you attend a Philharmonic concert, check out the newly-completed Lifetime Giving Wall, which was installed last week on the Grand Promenade of Avery Fisher Hall. The wall acknowledges the beneficence of the Philharmonic’s loyal supporters whose lifetime contributions support the Orchestra’s rich tradition of excellence. We salute our devoted supporters!

Canine Star Power

He’s 15 years old — that’s 105 in dog years — and already a media star. He has been lionized in two children’s books, visited by ABC News, and is beloved by all members of the New York Philharmonic, who perform onstage just a stone’s throw from his hangout. His name is Jake, and he’s a terrier mix who has come to work with his owner Richie — an Avery Fisher Hall stagehand — for all of his 15 years. (He even has his own Lincoln Center ID card!) Young readers were first introduced to him in Karen LeFrak’s book, Jake the Philharmonic Dog in 2006, and later, in Jake the Ballet Dog.
It’s a (Philharmonic) dog’s life for Jake, and the fame has not gone to his head. He would much rather have a good bone.
