Time Out for 360

image

We’re sorry that sickness sidelined Steve Smith from Philharmonic 360 in June, but thrilled that we still made his cut for the Best Opera and Classical Music of 2012 over at Time Out New York! Smith writes:

Placed last only because I missed it due to illness, this closely scrutinized, widely acclaimed event demanded citation for exemplifying Alan Gilbert’s most daring ambitions for the Phil.

Keep up on your echinacea and zinc for 2013. We’d hate for you to miss what we have in store!

It Isn’t Over Yet!
There is still time to witness Philharmonic 360, the New York Philharmonic’s groundbreaking “concert in the round” at the Park Avenue Armory, streaming on medici.tv. The June 29–30 concerts resulted from Alan Gilbert’s vision that Park Avenue Armory would be just the setting and partner to pull off Stockhausen’s Gruppen and other works by Mozart, Ives, and Boulez, all calling for a most unusual positioning of player and audience member.
This video, shot with ten cameras, allows you to move around the space, giving you an even broader sense of perspective than those who were there!

Park Avenue Armory Transformed

Those who think classical music needs some shaking up routinely challenge music directors at major orchestras to think outside the box. That is precisely what Alan Gilbert did on Friday night for an exhilarating concert with the New York Philharmonic in the Drill Hall of the Park Avenue Armory.

The luckiest audience in the world tonight will be at New York Philharmonic 360 performance at Park Avenue Armory in New York.
The highlight is Stockhasuen’s Gruppen for three orchestra; I say no more…

Backstage Pass

Take a glimpse at history in the making. This is a peek at the New York Philharmonic rehearsal of Stockhausen’s Gruppen, the three-orchestra centerpiece of Philharmonic 360, a co-presentation with Park Avenue Armory. The performances this Friday and Saturday mark the Philharmonic’s first at the Armory since 1882 and its first performance of Gruppen ever.

Holiday Wishes From One Visionary To Another

Archivists from the Stockhausen Foundation for Music discovered this 1969 Christmas Card from John Lennon and Yoko Ono to composer Karlheinz Stockhausen.

No doubt Lennon would have claimed a Back Jack seat in the middle of the action for the New York Philharmonic’s performance of Stockhausen’s Gruppen this Friday and Saturday at the Park Avenue Armory.

Follow That Cab

…to Philharmonic 360. Can anyone identify the first instrument that Philharmonic Assistant Timpani Kyle Zerna picks up when he and Principal Oboe Liang Wang get into the funky cab in this Follow The Sound video?

Check out this video and more at nyphil360.com to hear what’s in store Friday and Saturday night at the Park Avenue Armory.
